The (dystopian) future of money
The background story to our installation at Fibe 2025
„By 2065, the former EU has transformed into a fragmented economic zone where traditional state-backed currencies have collapsed. In their place, a hyper-dynamic system of blockchain-based, AI-regulated currencies has emerged. A practice called “stamping” now provides temporary stability and transactional security, but at a cost — influenced by reputation score and global truth metrics.“
With this work we seek to provoke rather than to predict - we like to foster a discussion on the impact of fintech, financial products and payment systems on our human condition on our joint future.
Based on already visible technological developments like robo-advisors in finance, algorithmic trading and agentive digital representation paired with ultra volatile (crypto) currencies and the global erosion of a common base for truthful information - we painted a dark future. A future where money needs be validated with more money (a dystopian spin on demurrage, like the early 1930s Austrian experiment of the "Wörgel" complementary currency), techno-feudalism has replaced or overtaken national governance one's social reputation score is the determining factor for transactional costs.
What it is worth
We build such a world not because of comic relief but a tool for thinking and back-casting to make informed decisions on how to not end up there. While there is still time.
How to engage
We use scenario building and futures thinking in a variety of occasion to help organisations to:
- Run workshops and sprints to align everyone to a common future vision
- Future proof their product-roadmaps
- Uncover opportunities beyond the next launch-date
